As stated in a previous post, “Change is hard!” Making a change in your life is a multiple-step and multifaceted process that can involve multiple conflicts before you see the resulting growth. Because change is difficult, it is critical to figure out why you want to change.
When thinking about making a change, it is normal to feel two ways about it! You may have a few reasons to keep things as they are and you may have a few reasons to change how things are.
Honestly Assess Your Motivation for Change
To figure out your real motivation to make a change in your life, be honest with yourself as you answer specific questions about your reasons to change.
-
What do I like about how things are now?
-
What do I dislike about how things are now?
-
What do I think I might be able to change based on my answers to the first two questions?
-
Why would I want to make this/these change(s)?
-
What concerns me about not making these changes?
-
How would my life be different if I made these changes?
-
How do these changes align with my most important values in life?
-
What do I think I will do?
-
When do I think I will do it?
-
Who can help me?
-
What do I permit them to do to help?
-
How can I stay motivated?
Remember Your Answers
Yes, change is extremely difficult, but real growth based on your motivations can help you push through the conflicts and truly change the trajectory of your life!
